What Exactly Is PRP, and Why Do We Love It?

Nurse Robyn here! I’m so excited to share a treatment that’s quickly becoming one of my favourites in the clinic: Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy. If you’ve been hearing about PRP online (sometimes called the “vampire facial”) and wondering what it actually is, let’s break it down in real, clear terms. PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma, a concentrated portion of your own blood that’s packed with platelets and growth factors. These are the cells and proteins in your blood that help with healing and tissue regeneration.
Here’s the cool part: instead of using something foreign or synthetic, PRP uses your body’s own natural resources to help refresh and rejuvenate your skin.
How Does It Work?
We draw a small amount of your blood, just like a routine lab blood draw. The blood goes into a centrifuge, which spins it at high speed to separate the plasma and platelets from the other components. The concentrated PRP is then gently re-introduced to your skin through microneedling or targeted injection. Once in the skin, those platelets release growth factors that help:
- Stimulate collagen production
- Support skin repair and renewal
- Improve skin texture and tone
This isn’t a quick “surface-level” fix, it works by encouraging your skin’s own healing processes. That is why we always suggest a series of three to maximize the amazing benefits of PRP.
What Can PRP Help With?
PRP Therapy can be a great option for people who want to:
- Improve fine lines and wrinkles
- Enhance skin texture and elasticity
- Reduce acne scarring or pigmentation irregularities
- Stimulate hair growth on the scalp
- Give overall skin a more youthful, refreshed look
Because it uses your own biology, it’s a very natural and well-tolerated approach.
Most patients describe PRP as very manageable, feeling like mild pressure or tiny pricks. Downtime is minimal, with some temporary redness or mild swelling possible right after your session, which typically settles within a day or two. As a nurse, I love PRP because it’s safe, effective, and natural, working with your body’s own biology rather than against it and it’s incredibly rewarding to see skin improve over time as true healing and collagen renewal take place. PRP is a great option for anyone looking for natural rejuvenation and willing to commit to a treatment plan for optimal results, and I’m always happy to book a consultation to chat about your goals and create a personalized plan just for you.
